Visitors to Deer Cave, standing on the observation platform at the end of the showcave path, can see the top of a large entrance in the cliffs on the opposite side of the Garden of Eden. This is the top entrance to Green Cave, once a continuation of Deer Cave before a vast underground chamber collapsed to form the closed valley that now lies between.
Locating the [lower] entrance to Green Cave can be a challenge, as can the leeches on the way, but gaining the system is a real reward. From the top of the slope at the start of the enormous entrance, a vista opens up underground and the vegetation on the floor and walls gives the cave its name.
The slope leads down to what appears, from the survey, to be a level passage for about 700m. In reality this involves some interesting route finding and short climbs to gain a small stream where a window in a rock flake gives a superb view across a wide shaft. A loose slope provides a route downwards and further climbs lead down to a sump. On the right wall, an obvious feature, The Arete, ascends upwards and from its top the passage leads to an entrance in the side of the Melinau Paku Valley.
